Bonding Process
Date:2010-8-4

After choosing a suitable adhesive and preparing the ideal plastic joints, there must guarantee a reasonable bonding process. Otherwise, it is difficult to achieve the expected results.

Bonding process including surface treatment, the confect of adhesive, coating, airing, congruence, cleaning and curing.

1, Surface Treatment
Surface treatments including face cleaning, degreasing oil, derusting & roughing, chemical processing, dry cleaning, details as below:

serial number

surface treatment

specific methods of operation

1

Clean

cleansing the oil, dust, rust and other impurities on the object surface, make it more slippery

2

Degrease

Degrease with organic solvents such as acetone, butanone, washing petrol, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, etc

3

Derusting& roughing

H and-polished, machinery sandblasting, grinding machinery, chemical derusting are available. Machinery sandblasting is the best.

4

chemical processing

Enhance the bond strength and durability by chemical reactions.

5

Clean & dry

The last step is to clean and dry the joint material

2, adhesive reposition

Category

Methods

Bicomponent adhesive
(Such as epoxy adhesive)

Accuracy weight for reposition , the containers and tools must be clean and dry. To the short application time adhesive, it is better using the flat & open container for heat emanation, avoiding wastage because of quick set.

One-component adhesive

Stir or shake evenly to ensure best performance.

3. How to gelatinize
The gelatinize time depends on the nature of adhesive, the materials to be joint and glue thickness. If it is non-solvent epoxy adhesive, once is OK. While solvent glue should gelatinize 2-3 times, the first time as thin as possible, the second time after solvent volatilization. Porous materials such as concrete and wood should add gelatinized times and quantity appropriately.

4, Open time
The open time is the time after the adhesive is applied and before it starts to set. This is the time that allows you to reposition material if necessary, Open time is for those solvent adhesives bonding that need air water. Single-component polyurethane adhesive also need open time for a while, even epoxy adhesive are the same, conducive to exclude air.
Open time will vary based on the ambient temperature and humidity. The higher temperature, the shorter open time. Humidity will affect bonding strengthen.

5 overlap

Category

Overlap methods

Non-solvent adhesive

After overlapping, rub the materials up and down to eliminate the bubble so that the adhesive are even.

Solvent adhesives

Overlapping at a time. Never separate it to bond again.

6, Cleaning and curing
(

1) clean-up: For superfluous glues or misused glues, we can use ethanol or acetone before epoxy curing. Neoprene glues cleaned with toluene, gas, acetone etc. Acrylic glue and sealants can use acetone, while water and ethanol for wood glue.
(2) curing: Curing can be divided into the first curing, the basic curing, after curing. Our company's epoxy adhesive is curing adhesive at room temperature, because low temperature curing reaction is not complete, the strengthen and heat resistance are lower.
Three elements of the curing is temperature, pressure and curing time. Impose pressure on your joint materials for a stronger bond. For solvent adhesive bonding, we must clamp all the time and press evenly. For some lower initial viscosity glues, it is better to add pressure step by step. Bonding pressure would vary with adhesives. Appropriate and even pressure will promote a better bond. Or else it would be lack of glues.
Curing temperature and the curing time is interdependence. In general, the higher temperature, the shorter curing time. Vice versa. However, the glues can’t set at very low temperature.
